چکیده

In this paper, the adaptive, minimum variance (MV) beamformer is applied to ultrasound data. Due to near-field properties, the energy of the ultrasound data reduces towards the edges of the transducer. The influence of this near-field effect is demonstrated, and a method to reduce this influence is proposed. By reducing the number of active sensor elements, an increased resolution can be obtained with the MV beamformer. This observation is directly opposite the well-known relation between the spatial extent of the aperture and the achievable resolution. The investigations are based on Field II simulated data using a 128-element transducer with a large spatial extent. The results show that an increased resolution can be obtained, when using only the central part of the transducer compared to using the entire spatial extent. Using the central 32 or 48 elements provides an increased resolution compared to using all 128 elements. PACS: 43.60 Acoustic Signal Processing.

Adaptive beamforming in row-column addressed arrays for 3D ultrasound imaging

In recent years, to reduce the complexity of implementation, the use of 2D arrays with restricted row-column addressing has been considered for 3D ultrasound imaging. In this paper, two methods of adaptive beamforming based on the minimum variance method are represented in such a way that the computational load is much less than using the full adaptive beamforming method. In both proposed metho...

Improving the quality of ultrasound images using Bayesian estimators

Medical ultrasound imaging due to close behavior of cancer tumors to body tissues has a low contrast. This problem with synthetic aperture imaging method has been addressed. Although the synthetic aperture imaging technique solved the low-contrast problem of ultrasound images, to an acceptable limit, but the performance of these methods is not even acceptable when the signal to noise ratio (SNR...

Session: P3C - BEAMFORMING III

For 4D Ultrasound systems to achieve the same angular resolution performance as linear phased array systems, they would require a very large number O(104) of sensors with insurmountable technical and higher cost implications. The alternative is to implement 3D adaptive beamformers in ultrasound systems that deploy phased array probes. The present work is part of the European Commission project ...

B-Mode Photoacoustic Imaging using Linear Array: Numerical Study for Forward-Backward Minimum Variance Beamformer Combined with Delay-Multiply-and-Sum

Photoacoustic imaging (PAI) is a promising medical imaging modality which provides the resolution of Ultrasound (US) and the contrast of Optical imaging modalities. One of the most important challenges in PAI is image formation, especially in the case that a linear-array US transducer is used for data acquisition. This is due to the fact that in the linear-array scenario, there is only 60 degre...

Phased array ultrasonic imaging using an improved beamforming based total focusing method for non destructive test

One of the novel ultrasonic phased array based scanning methods for ultrasonic imaging in non-destructive test is total focusing method (TFM). This method employs maximum available information of the phased array elements and leads to an improved defect detection accuracy compared to conventional scanning methods. Despite its high detection accuracy, TFM behaves weak in distinguishing the real ...
